California Spray Dry Company

Controller Screen

California Spray Dry Co., established in 1954, produces spray dried proteins and protein hydrolysate products for the feed, pet food, aquaculture and fertilizer industries. The plant is equipped with a 7,000 pound evaporation of water per hour spray dryer. Coupled with this unit is a Weigand mechanical vapor recompression, low temperature, stainless steel evaporator with a rate of 20,000 pounds of water per hour. These two units combined, dehydrate products at low temperatures to produce agglomerated dust-free powders. Complete liquid mixing, pumping, refrigerated storage, heating and centrifugation support equipment enhance the spray dryer’s ability to handle most protein products related to the feed industry. Critical factors in our enzyme process are the carefully regulated digestion process, concentration of protein hydrolysate under vacuum and rapid flow of raw material at low temperatures, thus minimizing any possible heat denaturization of the final product. This insures production of proteins of high nutritional quality and digestibility. Following drying, products are screened and packaged in a variety of ways, including multi-walled bags, bulk truck, or totes. The normal package of most products are palletized plastic wrapped bags to insure maximum storage life.

Spray drying is superior to other methods of dehydration in terms of maintenance of optimal product quality. Feed materials that are easily damaged by heat or oxidation can be effectively dried using spray drying techniques. Commonly used as the system of choice in the food industry, this method can satisfactorily produce dry powders that are hygroscopic as well as thermoplastic. Equipment and high processing standards are such that products produced meet all sanitary requirements in addition to satisfying nutritional guidelines.
